Why the Energy Ombudsman should publish complaints data
Posted on July 25th, 2011
Quality of service and price are usually the two crucial things to consider when signing up for a service, whether it is a mobile phone contract, a broadband provider or an energy supplier.
Finding the price is easy. There are dozens of comparison website who will do the job for you. But the one thing they cannot tell you is the quality of service you will receive.
For that there are no official figures or guidelines. Instead consumers must go on past experiences and recommendations from friends and families.
This is espeically true of the energy industry which does not publish any customer complaint data. Other sectors, such as financial services and telecoms are expected to report on complaints, but not energy.
Which? is calling on the Energy Ombudsman (EO) to publish its data about energy complaints.
The consumer group thinks that this would force energy companies to handle complaints across the sector better.
